Hearing the unsettling news of her daughter’s thoughts of suicide, Yolanda Dupree battled deep depression. This Mother-of-the-Year, warred against the inner chatter that says, “you failed as a mother.” She had to learn how to parent her daughter again.

Suicide deaths represent only a fraction of the toll that suicidal behavior takes among America’s youth. Data from the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS)* revealed that in the 12 months preceding the survey:

• 1 out of every 53 high school students (1.9 percent) reported having made a suicide attempt that

was serious enough to be treated by a doctor or a nurse. This included 1 out of every 43 (2.3

percent) female students and 1 out of every 62 (1.6 percent) male students.
